This is the first festival uniting different museums of St Petersburg in one event which was established in 2000. Each year several contemporary Russian and international artists get an opportunity to show their projects in large and small museums of the city. For one month the traditional museum spaces turn into contemporary art venues. The main goal of the festival is to bridge the gap between traditional culture and contemporary art, help the St Petersburg museums modernize, and attract broader public to contemporary art. Over the last 16 years 170 projects were shown in 79 St Petersburg museums by artists from 12 countries.
The 14th festival “Contemporary Art in the Traditional Museum” will take place in St Petersburg from September 23 till October 22, 2017. Invited curator in 2017 is Kathrin Becker, head of Video-Forum at Neuer Berliner Kunstverein in Berlin.
