The House Was Here

The House Was Here
Group X (Russia)
Vladimir Nabokov Museum
9 November, 2018 – 30 June, 2019

The revolutionary events forced the Nabokovs to leave their home at Bolshaya Morskaya street which is now the writer’s museum. Nabokov never returned to Russia again. According to him, this mansion remained his “only home in the whole world”. During his time in emigration the writer changed over 150 addresses moving from one “temporary stay” to another never the owner of his own home.

In Nabokov’s texts small remembrances of his old home, steeped in personal reminiscences and emotions, acquire a special value. The young St Petersburg based designers used the items from the mansion’s past furnishings and décor – household stuff, pieces of fabric upholstering, bricks, children’s toys – to create an installation that transfers the viewer into the “abandoned room”. These items weirdly inherited by us from the writer, preserved and cherished by the museum, are accompanied by quotations from Nabokov’s writings.
