Bill Viola is a video artist who has been creating and showing his work for 40 years. Kira Perov is his partner and collaborator, and working with Bill since 1979. They showed a video installation for the first time in Russia, in 1996, when "Science of the Heart" was presented in the Marble Palace, the State Russian Museum. In 2003, the St Petersburg Pro Arte Foundation presented “The Visitation” in the State Hermitage Museum, the very first video installation shown in the museum. In 2008 Valery Gergiev presented a production of "Tristan und Isolde" directed by Peter Sellars with four hours of video by Viola and Perov in the Mariinsky Concert Hall during the White Nights festival. Pro Arte Foundation also presented an installation in the Peter Paul Fortress, "The Quintet of the Astonished", in 2009. “The Silent Sea” was on view in the Hermitage in celebration of the museum’s 250th year anniversary in November 2014, and this work is now a part of the Hermitage collection.
At the lecture, Kira Perov will be talking about different ways of producing works, from the very simple, to the large productions with a large crew. The following works (excerpts) will be shown:
