San Francisco Museum of Modern Art : A New Museum for a Changing City
Lecture by Corey Keller

22 October 2018 at 7pm
Lecture Hall of the General Staff Building, the State Hermitage Museum (6/8 Dvortsovaya Ploschad, St Petersburg)

In 2016 the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) opened a ten-story expansion designed by renowned architecture firm Snøhetta. The new wing seamlessly integrates into the original 1995 building designed by Mario Botta, and triples the gallery space to nearly 170,000 feet. One of the features of the new space is the Pritzker Center for Photography, a 15,000 square foot facility dedicated to the display, study, and storage of SFMOMA’s exceptional photography collection.  Corey Keller, SFMOMA Curator of Photography,  will consider the impact of these architectural changes on visitors’ experiences inside the museum, as well as the museum’s place within the rapidly changing urban landscape of San Francisco.

Corey Keller is curator of photography at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA), where she has a member of the curatorial staff since 2003. During her tenure, she has organized numerous critically acclaimed exhibitions, including Brought to Light: Photography and the Invisible, 1840–1900 (2008), which explored the use of photography in nineteenth-century science, the traveling retrospective, Francesca Woodman (2011), and About Time: Photography in a Moment of Change (2016), the inaugural presentation of the photography collection in SFMOMA’s new building. Most recently, Keller organized an exhibition of the photographic maps of Sohei Nishino (2017), and is currently at work on the first survey of the nineteenth-century photographer J.B. Greene (2019) as well as the first full-scale retrospective of the work of Chicago-based artist Dawoud Bey (2020).
In addition to several SFMOMA publications, Keller has contributed scholarly essays on Jay DeFeo, Eadweard Muybridge, Susan Meiselas, Larry Sultan, and Carleton Watkins, among others.  A frequent public speaker, she co-organized the symposium “Is Photography Over?” in 2010 and the follow-up in 2016, entitled “The Photographic Event.” In addition to her curatorial work, she has taught at Stanford University, the San Francisco Art Institute, and the California College of the Arts.
She received her B.A. in American Studies from Yale University, and her M.A. in Art History from Stanford.

The lecture is organized by the PRO ARTE Foundation and the State Hermitage Museum,
and supported by the Trust for Mutual Understanding.
